tagbites 2017: July Offerings

July 2017 tagbites offerings

For this month of July, we have the following tagbites offerings:

jim pinto's Praxis:
The Black Monk
In The Black Monk, the characters are people living in a desolate, but vibrant world where time seems to have lost meaning. Living for decades, perhaps longer, in isolation from others, the people of Elysia toil in work, only to be visited once a year by the Black Monk.

In between these visits, their lives are interrupted by sometimes trivial and other times confusing events. Everything seems to fit together like an elongated jigsaw puzzle, but no one can see the starter pieces stretching across the horizon.

But they don’t complain. There is always more work. The village needs workers.

Then one evening, the sun stayed in the sky all day. When there should have been night, the sun remained. And now it feels as though it’s been years since the Black Monk came. But perhaps it was yesterday. Nothing is right…

Is that blood?

Praxis is a series of story roleplaying games that thrusts characters into dramatic situations and is based on the principles of the Protocol game system. Each game uses the same set of rules, with vastly different parameters, start-points, roles, plot twists, and finales. Praxis does not play like a traditional roleplaying game. It does not require a gamemaster. There is no script. No endpoint. No cumbersome or extraneous mechanics detracting from the story. An entire epic can be played in under four hours.

I had the luck of playing The Black Monk with the very author of the game while I was at Gamex 2017 in Los Angeles. The game was wonderfully surreal and combined dark fantasy with moments of horror and dread. The game reminded me of the works of Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker and I highly recommend it for those who want to add a new GMless game to their list of game experiences.

John Wick Presents
7th Sea 2nd edition
7th Sea is a tabletop role-playing game of swashbuckling and intrigue, exploration and adventure, taking place on the continent of Théah, a land of magic and mystery inspired by our own Europe.

Players take on the roles of heroes thrown into global conspiracies and sinister plots, exploring ancient ruins of a race long vanished and protecting the rightful kings and queens of Théah from murderous villains. It is a world of sharp blades and sharp wits, where a cutting retort can be just as deadly as a sword’s point.

I am a huge fan of the new 7th Sea game, and having also contributed to the Pirate Nations book of the gameline, I will probably be accused of being somewhat biased towards the system. But admittedly, I love how the game approaches shared Narrative Control, and I really enjoy the flavors the different Nations offers to the player. I highly recommend this for those who are used to the traditional RPG approach and want to open their horizons to something somewhat less traditional in its approach.  I mean, come on, in this game, the players very RARELY fail at anything.  (Unless they choose to).

If you are interested in trying either (or both) of these games, be sure to mention your interest in the tagbites Facebook Post for July.  If you have any other questions on tagbites, check out the faq which can be found here.
